Day 2 of Munich

We slept in a little bit and had a very German breakfast at our hotel. I had no idea that they ate dinner rolls and lunch meat for breakfast! It is definitely not my style at all. Luckily though they had coffee! We then got on a tram to go to the Nymphenburg Palace. It is the palace where the Bavaria rulers lived during their time in the city when they weren't in their gorgeous castles in the countryside. It was not what I expected at all and it was surprisingly not in the best of condition. The main ball room area was gorgeous but the gardens were nothing but plain grass and a little bit of flowers. The other rooms and paintings were very damaged and dirty. The place was in munch need of some tlc. It was still really impressive to see and some of the items in there were amazing. It is hard to believe that people actually lived in places like that.

After the palace we got back on the tram and were very thankful because it had started to rain. We then headed to the city market. It was huge and very impressive! It even had a beer garden which was full of people. We had some fresh sandwiches while my Father had a beer and enjoyed taking in the wonderful scenery around us.The market also had an awesome may pole.

After finishing our lunch we then went into two churches that were near the market. The first one we went in was the Church of the Holy Spirit. Of course it was impressive and beautiful. The other church we went in is the more famous St. Peter's. After looking around inside we then climbed the giant tower of the church to the top. We had the best views of Munich up there and the climb up was totally worth it. Unfortunately, many things in the city were under construction such as the Frauenkirche, the church with the two dome towers. After looking out over the city and taking pictures we started the descent to the bottom. Once we got to the ground floor we did a little bit of shopping and went for some gelato! I got a mint chocolate chip cone and it was delicious!

We slowly meandered and window shopped our way to the Residence, which is where the Royal family lived in the downtown area of Munich. In the plaza was another church, Theatinerkirche, which is a very bright yellow on the outside. It was a completely different style than all of the other churches in Munich.  In the same plaza was the Field Marshal's Hall, which was commissioned by King Ludwig to commemorate the Bavarian Army.

We continue walking and made it to the English Garden's, which is the largest park in all of Europe. We were dead set on seeing the Chinese Pagoda because it is one of the major attractions in the gardens; however, it was on the other side of the massive park. While trying to figure out where we were, we met an awesome Irish man who told us that there would be something we would really want to see if we crossed a nearby bridge. Of course we listened to the man and we found surfers! Yes, in a German river there were guys surfing. It was quite the operation and was very interesting to watch people surfer in a narrow river.

After watching the surfers for some time we caught the tram to get to the Chinese Pagoda. When we eventually made it to said pagoda we were not impressed. Since both my parents have been to China they claimed that it was nothing compared to the ones there. I thought it was interesting but not worth all the time spent looking for it. However, there was a beer garden! Which of course makes everything better so we got some drinks and a giant pretzel.

Later that night, we had dinner at the Ratskellar which was in the Marienplatz right under the Glokenspiel. Mom and I tried some interesting alcoholic drink that had champagne and fruit in it and it was surprisingly very strong. We had dessert of course and then went back to our hotel to pack and get ready to head to Salzburg for the next two nights.
